Resumo: Introduction: Obesity is a public health priority that is difficult to reverse, related to a complex network of several factors, making it impossible to measure the strength of each one for weight gain and impact on the life of the person with obesity. Objectives: to understand the meanings of obesity from the perspective of the person with obesity. Methods: descriptive, exploratory study, with an interpretive epistemological position, with a qualitative approach. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) instrument was used to guide the method. Eight people with obesity participated, through individual interviews, subsidized by a semi-structured script, in a virtual environment, synchronous by videoconference, recorded, transcribed and left by Content Analysis. Results: Six categories were determined: (I) Understanding about health; (II) Knowledge about health promotion; (III) Perception of ways of life; (IV) Understanding of obesity; (V) Coping with obesity; and (VI) Feelings related to obesity. It was concluded that it was possible to know the aspects related to living as a person with obesity, represented by negative, physical and psychological meanings, related to body image dissatisfaction, converging in the production of feelings of sadness and a cycle of suffering due to the social stigma and heavy prejudice.
