Resumo: | In the novel Até Hoje (Memórias de Cão), Álamo Oliveira presents us with a unique and bold interpretation of the colonial war, showing how this conflict can lead to the disintegration of identity, to a profound internal transformation and to the inevitable search for a new beginning. In the process, the image of Portugal as a glorious nation, publicized by nationalist discourse, is denounced and deconstructed. One important theme is homosexuality, depicted both as a result of the surrounding circumstances, of the urge to satisfy physical impulses and to mitigate solitude, anxiety and tedium faced in the military base, and as a part of personal identity, restrained for so long and finally accepted after the war. |
