Perspetivas de assédio sexual quotidiano contra as mulheres portuguesas: um olhar feminista

Sexual harassment is the occurrence of "any form of verbal, nonverbal or physical unwanted conduct of sexual nature, for the purpose or with the effect of violating someone's dignity, particularly, creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment", according to Margaret Crouch (2009). However, there is no concrete definition nor objective way of characterizing sexual harassment in the literature. So, in this text, we used a similar definition to Crouch's, in an attempt to make this term more objective, for this particular study, yet counting on its subjective ramifications. This way, through the use of the expression "quotidian sexual harassment", we refer to the invasive set of behaviours that happen on the streets and public or common non-working spaces and, generally, with such frequency and prevalence that can be considered typical of the daily life experience, essentially, to women. We sought to explore the meanings and perspectives towards the specific behaviours of everyday sexual harassment, trying to understand how portuguese women tend to interpret, react and handle external stimuli of sexual harassment. Through semi structured interviews to a sample of women, we reached a grounded theory of the data, analyzing them from a feminist and critical point of view. The interviewed women had all been harassed on the streets and other public spaces, practically all of them by strangers, expressing different ideas about the meanings of harassment behaviours, fitting them into different scales of fear or discomfort. We concluded that the ways of dealing with and reacting to ESH are unlimited and unique to each situation, highlighting the non-reaction - to ignore - and, under specific conditions, the verbal answer. The registered perspectives focus consistently that fear, discomfort, disgust and invasion are the main sensations and feelings in the characterization of everyday sexual harassment (for this sample).
