Objectives: The aim of this study is to verify if there is a relation between narcissism (grandiose and vulnerable), athletic identity, self-esteem and social physique anxiety and the variables present in the sociodemographical and swimming practice questionnaire. To complete this goal, the following specific objectives were drawn. 1) Characterize the sample; 2) verify the relation between the practice of swimming (competitive level, time of practice, starting age etc.) and the instruments used. 3) Investigate correlations between instruments used. Methods and materials: A questionnaire was built, including sociodemographical questions, as well as others regarding the practice of the sport, and also instruments that measure the level of narcissism (NPI and HSNS), athletic identity (AIMS-plus), self-esteem (RSES) and social physique anxiety (SPAS-R). The target audience was obtained by contacting several Swimming Associations from all over Portugal and also by sharing the questionnaire in social media (Facebook), with the goal of integrating casual swimmers in the study. The sample included 144 subjects, 81 males (56,3%) and 63 females (43,8%), with ages between 9 and 56 years old (M=21,15%; SD=8,26). Results: Statistically significant differences were found, mainly in the instruments that evaluate athletic identity and social physique anxiety. The instruments applied also show significant correlations between themselves, specially between the NPI and HSNS. Discussion/Conclusion: The data obtained sustains the hypothesis that the variables showcased hold some impact in the way the sport is practiced. Aspects such as the competitive level, age at beggining of practice and gender, do affect the way the sport is experienced, specially in the identification to the athletic role. The specificity of approaching a singular sport did pose as a limitation, due to the lack of similar articles, making comparisons more difficult. |
