The troika interventions in Greece and Portugal - a comparative analysis

Resumo: In the European debt crisis, Greece and Portugal received financial aid from the Troika, conditioned to required reforms. While the situation in Greece deteriorated and was often criticized, Portugal did better and was able to exit from the programs much earlier. This thesis aims at comparing both countries to find out why that was the case. For this, we analyze various macroeconomic indicators, but also investigate the question empirically using a panel regression. We find that the higher debt, the stricter austerity targets by the Troika, the weaker state structures and political turmoil in Greece played a main role.
