Enquanto organismo vivo, em constante mutação, Chaves foi-se transformando ao longo dos sucessivos períodos históricos, muito embora as marcas e os vestígios das anteriores ocupações sejam ainda possíveis de identificar no plano actual da cidade. Neste sentido, à semelhança do que ocorre com os demais centros urbanos históricos, o seu estudo será tanto mais completo quanto variados forem os olhares que sobre ela se debruçarem. Esta abordagem pretendeu realizar uma análise diacrónica do espaço urbano, com ênfase para os elementos remanescentes, quer soterrados, quer integrados no tecido urbano actual, que permitiram dar continuidade à urbanística flaviense, mas também, no presente, proceder ao seu estudo. Para tal, revelou-se imprescindível a articulação de um conjunto avultado de fontes de informações, bem como o recurso às novas tecnologias de informação. As primeiras, categorizadas como fontes arqueológicas, iconográficas, cartográficas, histórico-documentais, bem como o tecido histórico construído, constituíram as bases para a teorização sobre a morfologia urbana de Aquae Flaviae e de Chaves medieval. Por seu turno, o recurso à Informática, nomeadamente ao software de desenho assistido por computador (CAD), aos sistemas de informação geográfica (SIG) e de reconstituição tridimensional (Google Sketchup) possibilitaram a materialização da proposta de reconstituição do tecido urbano romano e medieval. Este trabalho inclui, ainda, um dossier constituído por um conjunto de anexos e apêndices, que incluem cartografia interpretada para os períodos históricos em questão, uma listagem e caracterização das zonas Intervencionadas até ao momento em Chaves. Pese embora não se trate de um tema novo, a aplicação de uma metodologia multidisciplinar permitiu-nos a obtenção de respostas a questões levantadas em estudos anteriores e a formalização de novas problemáticas de análise. Os resultados obtidos através deste tipo de abordagem revelaram-se bastante positivos e capazes de propiciar a continuação das pesquisas numa esfera mais ampla, mas também, mais detalhada, de forma a incrementar os conhecimentos sobre a evolução urbana da cidade de Chaves.This work aimed to analyze the morphology of the town of Chaves, since it was founded, in the roman era, till it's medieval configuration as Vila de Chaves, using a multidisciplinary methodological approach based on the Architecture's Archeology. As a living organism in constant mutation, Chaves continuously changed throughout the successive historical periods, even though the signs and traces of previous occupations can still be identified in the current plan of the town. Thus, like what happens with other historical urban centers, the more varied the approaches used to study it are, the more complete its study will become. This approach not only aimed to do a diachronic analysis of the urban area, with a focus on the remaining elements, either buried or integrated in the current urban tissue, that allowed the continuity of Chaves' urbanism, but also, in the present, to study it. To achieve this, it became evident that the usage of a vast group of information sources was fundamental, as well as using the new information technologies. Firstly, the information sources were categorized into archeological, iconographic, cartographic, historical/documentation sources, as well as the historical tissue built were the bases for the theorization concerning the urban morphology of Aquae Flaviae and of the medieval Chaves. Secondly, the use of information technologies, like computer-aided design (CAD) software, geographic information systems (GIS) and tridimensional reconstitution (Google Sketchup) enabled the materialization of the proposal to reconstitute the roman and medieval urban tissue. This work also includes a dossier composed of annexes and appendices, which include interpreted cartography for the aforementioned historical periods, a listing and characterization of the areas intervened till the present day in Chaves. Even though it's not a new theme, the application of a multidisciplinary methodology allowed us to obtain answers to questions that came up in previous studies and also to formalize new problems for analysis.
