Resumo: Weight loss and food behavioural problems are frequently observed among elderly people. This may lead to the development of disease processes and impair quality of life. The deterioration of nutritional status is related to mood, stress, psychological problems and reduced economic circumstances. The aim of this article is to present the author's opinion, concerning the best type of nutrition that the geriatric population should practise, in order to prevent weight loss and evolution of disease processes.

Esta situação conduz à desnutrição grave bem como ao aparecimento de vários tipos de doenças que provocam uma maior morbilidade e mortalidade neste grupo etário. Em geral, as causas mais importantes da desnutrição nas pessoas idosas são provocadas pelo isolamento, depressão, diminuição da acuidade visual, do olfacto, bem como por insuficiente capacidade económica.
