Resumo: The research aimed to analyse the regional economy of Portugal to reveal the economic specialization and diversification in its regions and the productive capacities in each territory. The theoretical-methodological framework that supported the study stems from the related variety approach that highlights the relevance of the interaction between different economic activities (transactions, exchanges of information, etc.) for territorial development. The results show an economic structure with greater possibilities for development in the central and northern regions of the country, taking advantage of the interaction with existing activities
