Abstinence and alcohol consumption among students: the influence of personal, family and socio-cultural spheres

Resumo: Introduction: Among young people, regular or alcohol abuse seems to ally with individual factors, which congregate to other generators behaviors health risk, in social environment, including family and school. The consumption of alcoholic beverages in the younger age groups, according to the World Development Report goes beyond 60%. Objective: This study aims to know the personal influences of family, of belonging to the group and the school environment, on the withdrawal and consumption habits among young people. Methods: A qualitative nature of research, using comprehensive semi-structured interviews, was developed in a school district of Evora, Portugal. The sample consists of 10 students from the 8th school grade, five non-consumers-five consumers. Results: The trial takes place between 12 and 14 years old as a result of curiosity, explicit or tacit motivation, “give style”, the environment, entertainment and observing behavior. Among the effects of intake indicated as motivators consumption highlight the joy of reaching states and willingness. Family members tend to encourage moderate drinking on festive occasions. The elements of the group of belonging tend to motivate explicitly, the intake among consumers students. Conclusions: The consumption of alcohol among young people suffer the personal, family and belonging group influences. The initiatives in school tend to have no effect.

El consumo de bebidas alcohólicas en los grupos de edad más jóvenes, según el World Developement Report va más allá de un 60%. Objetivos: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo conocer las influencias personales de la familia, de grupo y el entorno escolar que pertenece, sobre los hábitos de abstinencia y el consumo de alcohol entre los jóvenes. Métodos: naturaleza cualitativa de la investigación, a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas exhaustivas, desarrollada en una escuela del distrito administrativo de Evora, Portugal. La muestra se compone de 10 estudiantes de 13-14 años de edad, cinco no consumidores y cinco consumidores. Resultados: La experimentación com el alcohol se lleva a cabo entre 12-14 años de edad, como resultado de la curiosidad, la motivación explícita o tácita o para “dar estilo”, el medio ambiente, el entretenimiento y la observación de la conducta. Entre los efectos de la ingesta indicados cómo fatores motivadores al consumo resalta la alegría de los estados alcance y disposición. Los miembros de la familia tienden a fomentar el consumo moderado en ocasiones festivas. Los elementos del grupo de pertenencia tienden a motivar de manera explícita, la ingesta entre los estudiantes consumidores. Conclusiones: El consumo de alcohol entre los jóvenes sufren las influencias personal, familiar y del grupo de pertenencia. Las iniciativas en la escuela tienden a tener poco efecto.Introdução: Entre os jovens, o uso regular ou abusivo do álcool parece aliar-se a fatores individuais, em ambiente social. O consumo de bebidas alcoólicas, nas faixas etárias mais jovens, segundo o World Development Report, vai além dos 60%. Objetivo: Este estudo pretendeu conhecer as influências pessoais, dos familiares, do grupo de pertença e do meio escolar, sobre os hábitos de abstinência e de consumo de bebidas alcoólicas entre os jovens. Métodos: Investigação de carácter qualitativo, com recurso a entrevistas compreensivas semiestruturadas, desenvolvido numa escola do distrito de Évora, Portugal. A amostra é constituída por 10 alunos do 8º ano de escolaridade, cinco não consumidores e cinco consumidores. Resultados: A experimentação acontece entre os 12-14 anos de idade em consequência da curiosidade, motivação explícita ou tácita, para “dar estilo”, do ambiente, da diversão e da observação de comportamentos. Entre os efeitos da ingestão indicados como motivadores ao consumo destaca-se o atingir estados de alegria e boa disposição. Os familiares tendem a incentivar a ingestão moderada em ocasiões festivas. Os elementos do grupo de pertença tendem a motivar, de forma explícita, à ingestão, entre os alunos consumidores. Conclusões: A ingestão de bebidas alcoólicas entre os jovens sofre as influências pessoal, familiar e do grupo de pertença.
