Fringe Belts on the periphery of capitalism: the cases of Belém and Manaus

The planet is in a climate emergency situation, and much is said about the priority of preserving forests, but the connection between city and nature is still little understood in the Brazilian rainforest. In the Amazon, 80% of the population live in cities, where two metropolises - Belém and Manaus are references for smaller towns. This research identifies and spatializes the formation phases of fringe belts for these metropolises, the socio-economic processes, uses and actors involved in their production or affected by their disappearance, under the light of a socio-ecology. The peripheral belts are markers of phases of expansion and stagnation in both cities, where the most preserved belts are those intended for institutional uses; however, there is rapid disappearance of these interstices, either by informal occupation, or by action of the real estate sector, given the intense migratory flow to the two cities. We conclude that the convergence between ecological aspects, urban planning and morphology is urgent because both inside and outside the cities the forest is a means of production for the native population and of providing ecosystem services, and because the short circuits and connection flows between city and forest favour life both locally and globally.
