Resumo: | Companion animals – especially dogs and cats – are increasingly part of people's lives, maintaining close contact, essentially sharing living spaces in their own homes. Consequently, there is also a greater concern for the health and well-being of animals, which has reflected an increased demand for available health care. This set of factors has been showing the susceptibility of transmission of antibiotic resistant genes between animals and people. Veterinary Nurses represent animal health professionals who provide veterinary care to companion animals, maintaining direct and permanent contact, in both clinical / hospital context, on an ongoing basis with patients. Thus, these professionals may be more exposed to the danger of acquiring resistance, as well as being disseminators of the same danger themselves. It is intended, through a questionnaire survey, to understand within the class of veterinary nurses, what is their knowledge and perception on the issue of resistance to antibiotics, as well as on good practices for preventing both the appearance and dissemination of this resistance. During a period of four months, through email and social networks, the questionnaire survey was disseminated to a convenience sample of the universe of veterinary nurses in Portugal, to achieve the objectives of this study. It was assumed that although veterinary nurses have technical knowledge, sometimes clinical practices are not properly performed to prevent exposure and dissemination of resistance. The results show a trend: with years of experience in the profession, there tends to be a decrease in good practices in order to prevent the occurrence and dissemination of resistance to antibiotics. Likewise, veterinary nurses with less experience in the profession reveal to have more knowledge and awareness of the problem of antibiotic resistance. With the results obtained in the survey, we hope to be able to alert the problem in question, but also to list a set of good practices necessary for safeguarding health from a One Health perspective. |
