Resumo: The aim is to develop and apply a statistical model of regression to an explanatory observational study, in this case, a sportive competition: the National Football Championship of the I League of 1998/99. The model serves the objectives of description, control and prediction of the football games results (dependent variable) through statistical data for the behaviour of the teams under analysis (independent variables). The developed model allows making an estimate and the confidence intervals of the final classification and its comparison with the one that was really observed. The procedures used, in the development of the statistical model to analyse this case, exemplify the application of a regression model to explanatory observational studies, illustrating the various steps followed and it may serve as a basis to other similar studies.

Le modèle sert les objectifs de description, contrôle et prévision des résultats des matches de football (variable dépendante) à partir de données statistiques concernant le comportement des équipes en analyse (variables indépendantes). Le modèle développé permet de réaliser une estimation et les respectifs intervalles de confiance de la classification finale et la comparaison avec celle qui a été réellement observée. Les procedures utilisées, dans le développement du modèle statistique pour l'analyse de ce cas, permettent d'exemplifier l'application d'un modèle de régression à des études observationnelles explivatives, illustrant les divers pas suivis et elles peuvent devenir la base de travail pour d'autres études pareilles.Pretende desenvolver-se e aplicar um modelo estatístico de regressão a um estudo observacional explicativo, neste caso, uma competição desportiva. O Campeonato Nacional de Futebol da l Divisão de 1998199. O modelo serve os objectivos de descrição, controlo e previsão dos resultados dos jogos de futebol (variável dependente) a partir de dados estatísticos para o comportamento das equipas em análise (variáveis independentes). O modelo desenvolvido permite realizar, de um modo significante, uma estimativa e respectivos intervalos de confiança da classificação final e a sua comparação com a realmente observada.
