Resumo: Gastro-esophageal reflux disease occurs when gastric reflux causes esophageal or extra-esophageal symptoms or complications and is associated with respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic cough, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cystic fibrosis. The relationship between gastro-esophageal reflux disease and different lung diseases has been extensively studied, but the establishment of causality is complex. Gastric content microaspiration with direct epithelial lesion and the vagus nerve-mediated broncho-esophageal reflex are the two best-studied pathophysiological mechanisms. This review explores the relationship between gastro-esophageal reflux disease and pulmonary pathology, highlighting gaps in current knowledge and elucidating the different diagnostic and therapeutic options.
