This research is the result of my concerns when I see my country being devastated and its riches laid waste (forests, rivers, seas, minerals, land and also people) in the name of development. I ask, development of what and for whom? The aim of this dissertation is to analyse ecofeminist critiques of development from the standpoint of women in Maputo province and their thoughts. I started from a conceptual framework based on ecofeminist theory and a social-critical epistemological orientation, with a geographical and temporal focus that places Maputo province over the last 10 years at its centre. The methodological approach is qualitative, and I used focus group interviews as my information-gathering technique. As discussed throughout the dissertation, ecofeminist critiques of development can be summarized in four essential points: (1) the Western anthropocentric vision, which continues to define humanity's relationship with the planet and all the living and non-living beings that inhabit it; (2) the presence of androcentrism and misogyny in development thinking; (3) the development discourse as a patriarchal, colonial and capitalist product which adopts a predatory and extractive view of life, promoting global climate catastrophes with socially unequal consequences for women and men in accordance with their origin, class and social status; and finally, in particular from African ecofeminists, (4) the profile of developmental extractivism in Africa combined with the specific ecological effects to which the continent is exposed, and their impact on women. From the starting point of these critiques, I have carried out a critical analysis of the discourse of some key actors in Mozambique's development policies: the Government of Mozambique, the World Bank, and the US Agency for International Development (USAID); and I also organized two focus group interviews, one with a group of women academics and activists, and the other with a group of peasant women from Maputo province. I conclude that the Mozambican government and its international partners have been betting on an extractive development policy in which commodification and the economic imperative prevail over social well-being and environmental balance. Development as a fair distribution of benefits, personal and collective flourishing, in harmony with the environment is certainly a mirage. So far, the path the country has taken has been the opposite: militarization, state authoritarianism, increasing public debt, conflicts, inequalities, climate disasters and lack of social welfare. At a time when the country is dominated by neoliberal and extractivist capitalist policies, in which life is a privilege for some and not a right for all, I argue that ecofeminist critiques correspond to the concerns and challenges of these Mozambican women from different contexts. As such, this dissertation aims to contribute to the collective construction of ecofeminist thinking and practices that emerge from a way of speaking and thinking about the world from southern Mozambique.Como vários países africanos, Moçambique atravessa uma crise social, política e económica e sofre as consequências da catástrofe ecológica global. Este trabalho resulta das minhas preocupações quando vejo o país ser devastado e arrasado em todas as suas riquezas (florestas, rios, mares, minérios, terra e também pessoas) e a adoecer em nome do desenvolvimento. Pergunto, desenvolvimento de quê e para quem? O objetivo desta dissertação é analisar as críticas ecofeministas ao desenvolvimento a partir do contexto e das reflexões de mulheres da província de Maputo. Parti de um quadro conceptual com um marco teórico ecofeminista e uma orientação epistemológica social-crítica dando-lhe um recorte geográfico e temporal, que coloca ao centro a província de Maputo nos últimos 10 anos. A abordagem metodológica é qualitativa e, como técnica de recolha de informação, adotei a realização de entrevistas focalizadas de grupo. As críticas ecofeministas ao desenvolvimento, tal como discutidas ao longo da dissertação, podem ser resumidas em quatro pontos essenciais: (1) a visão antropocêntrica ocidental, que continua a definir a relação da humanidade com o planeta e todos os seres vivos e não-vivos que nele habitam; (2) a presença do androcentrismo e da misoginia no pensamento desenvolvimentista; (3) o discurso do desenvolvimento, enquanto produto patriarcal, colonial e capitalista, que adota uma visão predadora e extrativa da vida, promovendo catástrofes climáticas globais, com consequências socialmente desiguais para mulheres e homens segundo a sua origem, classe e estatuto social; e, por fim, e a partir das ecofeministas africanas, (4) o perfil do extrativismo desenvolvimentista em África, com o seu impacto sobre as mulheres e os efeitos ecológicos específicos a que o continente está exposto. A partir destas críticas, realizei uma análise crítica do discurso de alguns atores chave para as políticas de desenvolvimento de Moçambique, nomeadamente: o Governo de Moçambique, o Banco Mundial e a Agência dos EUA para o Desenvolvimento Internacional (USAID); e organizei duas entrevistas focalizadas de grupo, uma com um grupo de mulheres académicas e ativistas, e outra com um grupo de camponesas da província de Maputo. Concluo que o Governo de Moçambique e os seus parceiros internacionais têm vindo a apostar numa política de desenvolvimento extrativista em que a mercantilização e o imperativo económico se sobrepõem ao bem-estar social e ao equilíbrio ambiental. O desenvolvimento como um patamar de justa distribuição dos benefícios, do florescimento pessoal e coletivo, em harmonia com o ambiente é, certamente, uma miragem. Até agora, o caminho que o país tem tomado tem sido o inverso: militarização, autoritarismo estatal, aumento da dívida pública, conflitos, desigualdades, desastres climáticos e ausência de bem-estar social. Num período em que o país é dominado por políticas capitalistas neoliberais e extrativistas para as quais a vida é um privilégio de alguns e não um direito de todas e todos, argumento que as críticas ecofeministas correspondem às preocupações e aos desafios destas mulheres moçambicanas vindas de diferentes contextos.
