Resumo: | Amyand’s hernia, first described, in 1735, by Claudius Amyand, consists of an inguinal hernia with the appendix in its sac. It is a rare unknown disease, diagnosed mostly during surgery for treatment of the inguinal hernia. The authors present a case of a 38 year-oldman, who went to the emergency room, with an inguinal inflammatory tumor. He was diagnosed a strangulated inguinal hernia and proposed surgical treatment. During surgery, the vermiform appendix was found within the hernia sac, inflamed and perforated by a foreign body. Trata-se de uma entidade nosológica rara e, muitas vezes, desconhecida. O seu diagnóstico é, maioritariamente, intraoperatório. A propósito do tema, os autores apresentam, o caso de um homem de 38 anos de idade, que recorre ao Serviço de Urgência por tumefacção inguinal unilateral, com sinais inflamatórios. Foi-lhe diagnosticada hérnia inguinal estrangulada e proposto tratamento cirúrgico. Intraoperatoriamente, observou-se saco herniário com apêndice ileocecal, supurado e perfurado por corpo estranho. Procedeu-se a apendicectomia e herniorrafia.
