Resumo: Being aware of the boom in the growth of studio typologies in contemporarycities, the implications of this stance and the emergence of this topic in society, this dissertation attempts to investigate the reasons for investment in these unitsby the real estate sector. These are generally designed for renting and short-termpermanence - believed to be outcomes of a process of gentrifcation Portuguesecities are currently undergoing. In the past, short-term housing has been associated with the debut of adult lifeor the exodus from rural areas of the country (in the sixties, sub-letting rooms orparts of a unit was common practice). This is no longer the case. The qualitiesthese new units are able to provide - namely fexibility and adaptability - allow fora better urban lifestyle - when compared to the scattered old rooms - as well asbetter living conditions. The evolution living confgurations, along with the changes in technology, since the digital revolution, are related to this tendency. An increase in demand has become the focus of interest for promoters, whoseconsequence is the optimization of spaces. Nonetheless, should cities becomea simple outcome of short-term housing? Despite the existence of an enticinghousing market for investors - grounded on a certain kind of inhabitant, necessarily different from the traditional one - are cities able to survive without permanentfamilies, that is, groups that are able to create cultural roots?Given the relevance of the topic, it's important to study how these typologiesare changing the city of Porto as response of the new ways of contemporaryliving and the growth of tourism phenomenon.
