The occupation of flood plains intensifies with the urban expansion, enhancing the artificiality, waterproofing and concentration of people and property in susceptible areas to the natural rise of the river level. This fact changes the territorial vulnerability and increases the number of exposed elements to flood events. Once April 1962 flood, in Vila do Conde, was the most significant of the twentieth century in terms of damage, the delimitation of the flood perimeter was performed from photos, aerial photography from 1958 and population surveys, as well as the analysis of the hidro-geomorphological context of this flood. This work will focusprimarily on the flooded area of República Square and its contiguous areas, since they were the most affected. Through this exercise it was possible to understand the importance of the urban and functional changes that the República Square and its adjacent blocks suffered and the impact that a similar occurrence would have today. These results enable the study offlood vulnerability adapted to urban riparian areas.
