Resumo: | This article is part of a Ph.D. research that questions the role of a Chief Design Officer (CDO) in companies within the Portuguese business landscape. Understanding the history of Portuguese design becomes relevant to provide a local framework and to grasp the contemporary positioning of design leadership, aiming for a broader perception of the value of design in Portugal. The decades between 1950 to the present day were defined as the observational space, based on an extensive systematic literature review that includes the assessment of companies, designers, exhibitions, publications, organisms, courses, and educational institutions that acted, or were spaces of action, in this timeframe. The political, social, cultural, and economic scene of the country and Europe have also been observed, enabling a deeper understanding of the historical events outlined. As a hypothesis, a historical overview of the design profession in Portugal is suggested, classified into: affirmation (1950 to 1968); institutionalization (1969 to 1979); recognition (1980 to 1989); internationalization (1990 to 1999); setbacks and recognition (2000 to 2022). It is expected that this study validates this hypothesis and provides holistic results to establish a growth pattern in the mainstreaming of design within the business arena and Portuguese society.and Portuguese society. |
