Resumo: There are several mythical representations of the visceral connection of mothers to their children, transmitted by the Greek and Latin literary tradition. This text aims to present some of them based on two distinct themes: 1) motherhood as a threat to the world of men; and 2) the mother's experience of losing her children. The textual corpus under discussion includes excerpts from Homer's Iliad, Hesiod's Theogony, and the Homeric Hymn to Demeter
