Portuguese Migration to Germany: An Analysis of Labor Market Performance and Self-Selection

Resumo: The paper utilizes a new dataset which is provided by the German Labor Office since 1996 and covers the period 1975-1990. Because of the large size of the 'Beschaftigentenstichprobe' it is possible to analyze the labor market performance of such a relatively small group like Portuguese workers in Germany. Furthermore, we were able to match the German data with similar Portuguese cross-section data for 1982 and 1986. Most of the existing migration literature compares the wages and characteristics of migrants to those of the population of the receiving country. The availability of individual data from both, the receiving and the sending country, allows us to compare the migrants also to the population of the sending country. The results of such an analysis allows further insights into the effectiveness and the economic effects of a selective migration policy.
