Resumo: Due to the continuous growth of bandwidth need, passive optical networks (PONs) emerged. From the Gigabit-PON (G-PON), 10 Gigabit-PON (XG-PON) and Time Wavelength Division Multiplexing PON (TWDM-PON), they still being made studies on passive optical networks that can meet the bandwidth requirements of the future, such as the Ultra Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing PON (UDWDM-PON). In this thesis, the mentioned technologies are studied, describing the main features of the existing ones. It is also made an individual study for each technology in terms of sensitivity. Also, it is made a study on coexistence scenarios, by analysing the impact of the other technologies on UDWDM-PON.

Passando pela G-PON (Gigabit-PON), XG-PON (10 Gigabit PON) e TWDM-PON (Time Wavelength Division Multiplexing PON), continuam a ser feitos estudos de redes óticas passivas que possam cumprir os requisitos de largura de banda no futuro, como é o caso da UDWDM-PON (Ultra Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing PON). Nesta dissertação são estudadas as tecnologias acima referidas, descrevendo as principais características das tecnologias já existentes. É também efetuado um estudo individual a cada uma das tecnologias em termos de sensibilidade.
