Resumo: This work presents a set of different activities, all centered on the theme ‘medicines’, including various aspects related to their origin, production, effects on our bodies, research and conservation. The didactic sequence includes numerous activities, such as: open-ended questions to assess prior knowledge; interpretation of written information and problem-solving tasks based on household objects; discussion of movies and cartoons; experimental laboratory work; use of models for interpreting daily observed phenomena; and workshops with university students. These activities allow to address, in a comprehensive way, all the contents of the 1st year of the Physical - Chemistry curriculum of many of our secondary schools. Some of the activities were designed based on students’ concerns and proposals. They were able to link the issues addressed in class to their own experiences and write texts and reports, which led them, as observed in assessment moments, to demonstrate better employment of the course’s language. The possibility of linking one issue to many subjects allowed the integration of different contents in only one context, encouraging students’ critical and responsible thinking. The premise of a critically teaching science contributed to the development of skills, abilities, basic competences and values required by the new educational framework.

The premise of a critically teaching science contributed to the development of skills, abilities, basic competences and values required by the new educational framework.
