Resumo: Introduction: The study of the severity index of people victims of trauma by road accidents is configured as a factor of concern and a professional challenge, which justifies the development of an investigation on this problem. Objective: To determine the trauma severity index in road accident victims admitted to the Emergency Department. Methods: Descriptive study, with a retrospective cohort, carried out with clients who went to the emergency department due to a road accident, between January and June of 2020. Data were collected by consulting the Alert® Information System of a hospital center in the Central region of Portugal. Results: A minimum trauma severity index score of 2.63 and a maximum of 7.85 was obtained, corresponding to an average of 7.76±0.50. The variables with statistically significant interference (p<0.05) made it possible to verify that people who are victims of trauma from a road accident with the highest risk of severity are: men, whose etiology was the bicycle, transported by their own means, with a diagnosis of limb contusion, pain, sternum fracture, cervical trauma and alcoholism and walking/wheelchair. Conclusion: The results translate into a contribution to provide differentiated and specialized nursing practices and care in Medical-Surgical Nursing to the person victim of trauma by road accident.
