Com o intuito de contextualizar e de sustentar a reforma litúrgica procedente deste Concílio e dado que, essencialmente, a resposta passava por um regresso às origens, inicia-se esta dissertação tentando compreender de que forma surge e se desenvolve, nos primeiros séculos, o espaço sagrado cristão, destacando ainda alguns momentos importantes na definição do espaço até ao século XIX. É através de uma viagem pela história do espaço litúrgico que se procura estudar os antecedentes que permitiram a reforma realizada pelo Vaticano II, nomeadamente o «movimento litúrgico».De seguida, procede-se ao estudo de documentos conciliares e pós-conciliares com destaque para as questões arquitetónicas, procurando, desta forma, fixar as dimensões e os aspetos que definem uma igreja e que devem ser tidos em conta aquando de uma qualquer intervenção nos edifícios com este programa.Foi através da apresentação de seis exemplos de igrejas – a igreja da Serra do Pilar, em Gaia; a igreja Paroquial de Quiaios; a igreja de Santa Isabel, em Lisboa; a igreja do Colégio São João de Brito, em Lisboa; a igreja de São Martinho de Cedofeita, no Porto; e a Igreja de Santo Inácio, em Paris – que se procurou expor o problema da reabilitação de algumas igrejas pré-conciliares, demostrando como se podem quebrar determinados paradigmas que todavia permanecem relativamente ao assunto.Por fim, para completar o percurso desenvolvido, procurou-se estabelecer uma relação entre o tema estudado e aquela que é a experiência dos vários fiéis nas igrejas que frequentam. Para tal, foi realizado um inquérito aos utilizadores do espaço litúrgico, por forma a compreender de que forma é que estes veem hoje o espaço da igreja e que caminhos consideram que deve seguir no futuro. Trata-se de uma recolha que, em nosso entender, ajuda a compreender melhor o que deve ser uma igreja nos dias de hoje de acordo com a sensibilidade dos que nela procuram o espaço privilegiado de expressão da sua fé.The present thesis aims to explore a dimension of catholic religious architecture, namely its challenges regarding intervention and the rehabilitation of the interior of its churches and temples - the liturgical space - built before the Second Vatican Council.With the intention of contextualizing and sustaining the liturgical reformation set forth by this council and given the retrospective nature of its intentions - which can be referred as a return to the roots -, the work here presented, intends to grasp the ways through which the sacred christian space was brought about and developed, during its early centuries, singling out relevant moments in space definition, all the way up to the 19th century.
This journey across the history of the liturgical space is what allows for the study of the reality which preceded the Second Vatican Council, namely its "liturgical movement”.Afterwards a study of conciliar and post-conciliar documents is conducted, highlighting the architectural question with the aim to clearly define the different facets and aspects which define a church, and must be taken into account during any intervention made to buildings with a church-like programme.The issue of rehabilitating some pre-conciliar churches, and the breaking down of certain paradigms which still remain regarding this topic; is approached making use of six different case-studies: the church of the Serra do Pilar; the parrochial church of Quiaios; the Santa Isabel church in Lisbon; the São João de Brito school church in Lisbon; the church of São Martinho de Cedofeita, in Porto; and the church of Saint-Ignace in Paris.Finally, to wrap-up the work developed, it was attempted to establish some correlation between the topic at hand and the experiences of the faithful at the churches which they attend. For this purpose, an inquiry was created and distributed among the main users of liturgical spaces, with the goal to understand what views are held regarding these areas today and what they believe should be the way forward.
