Resumo: | The article focuses on the concept of urbanism as an autonomous disciplinary area and a specific field of public policy. The article reasons that the public policy of urbanism has been facing a change of azimuth. It conveys the drop of the morphologic primacy and the raise of urban development, demanding for a new strategic, integrated and multidimensional perspective. Among other aspects, this change is expressed on a transmutation of terminology associated with the emergence of the concept policy for cities. Departing from a reflection on the origins and evolution of urbanism, and especially focusing on the development of the urban policy in Portugal, the article debates the changes and unfolds that have took place. As such, it aims to bring further contributions, not only to reconfigure concepts and doctrine, but also to rethink and reset the role of urbanism and urban policy within the framework of a national policy agenda. |

Argumenta-se que a política pública de urbanismo tem vindo a enfrentar uma mudança de azimute associada à libertação da política urbana do primado morfológico e à sua reorientação para a problemática do desenvolvimento urbano, apelando a uma nova perspetiva estratégica, integrada e multidimensional. Entre outros aspetos, esta mudança traduz-se numa transmutação terminológica associada à emergência do conceito de política de cidades. Partindo de uma reflexão sobre as origens do urbanismo e sua evolução, e focando em especial o desenvolvimento da política de urbanismo em Portugal, o presente texto procura debater as mudanças e desdobramentos ocorridos.
