Isso é especialmente preocupante entre estudantes universitários, devido aos novos ambientes e à maior independência que podem levar a um padrão de consumo compulsivo de álcool. A disponibilidade ampliada e diferentes motivações, como socialização, copying, euforia e conformidade, contribuem para sua prevalência. Embora o consumo de álcool seja considerado normal, ele acarreta consequências negativas e de gravidades variadas. No entanto, existem estratégias comportamentais de proteção para mitigar essas consequências. Este estudo investiga a relação entre motivos de consumo, comportamentos de proteção, consumo compulsivo de álcool e suas consequências negativas. Uma amostra de 322 estudantes da Universidade de Coimbra participou respondendo a um questionário que incluía o Questionário Diário de Bebida (DDQ), a Escala de Relevância do Álcool na Vida Universitária (CLASS), o Questionário de Motivos de Consumo Revisado (DMQ-R), o Questionário Breve de Consequências do Álcool para Jovens Adultos (B-YAACQ) e Estratégias de Comportamento Protetor (PBSS-21). Os resultados indicam que o ambiente universitário representa um fator de risco para o consumo compulsivo de álcool e suas consequências negativas, especialmente entre estudantes mais jovens e do sexo masculino. Isso ressalta a importância de oferecer suporte e intervenções direcionadas a esses indivíduos, considerando sua maior vulnerabilidade. No entanto, este estudo tem limitações, pois medidas autorrelatadas podem ser imprecisas, devido à consciência limitada dos estudantes sobre seus níveis de consumo e comportamentos relacionados. Portanto, recomendamos a realização de estudos adicionais em diferentes períodos, especialmente aqueles associados a um maior consumo de álcool, bem como pesquisas qualitativas para melhor compreender as motivações subjacentes ao consumo e como os estudantes percebem as consequências do consumo excessivo de álcool.Alcohol consumption is a serious problem world-wide, as most societies accept and endorse its use, often overlooking the negative consequences that follow its consumption.This issue is particularly concerning within the university student population due to the combination of new environments and increased independence that can contribute to a binge drinking pattern of alcohol consumption. Increased availability of alcohol, along with various motivations such as socializing, coping, enhancement, and conformity, contribute to its prevalence. Although alcohol consumption is commonly perceived as a normative behavior, itʼs accompanied by negative consequences that vary in severity. However, there are protective behavioral strategies that can be implemented to mitigate these consequences. This study investigates the relationship between drinking motives, protective behaviors, binge drinking, and negative consequences of alcohol consumption. A sample of 322 students from Coimbra University participated in the study by completing a questionnaire comprising the Daily Drinking Questionnaire (DDQ), College Life Alcohol Salience Scale (CLASS), Drinking Motives Questionnaire Revised (DMQ-R), Brief Young Adult Alcohol Consequences Questionnaire (B-YAACQ), and Protective Behavior Strategies (PBSS-21). The results showed that the university setting is a risk factor for binge drinking and negative consequences from alcohol consumption, particularly higher for younger and male students. These results highlight the critical importance of providing increased support and targeted interventions for these individuals, considering their heightened vulnerability. This study is not without limitations as self-reported measures may be imprecise, as students might have a limited awareness of their own consumption levels and related behaviors.
