Objectives: Aware that alcohol is an addiction, when striving to achieve abstinence, the patient depends on a series of variables to which motivation is intimately linked. Thus, it becomes pertinent to understand the personality, levels of self-compassion, self-criticism, shame and psychopathological symptomatology of the individual in the inpatient context, thus relating it to the readiness to change. Method: They were assessed using the Sociodemographic Questionnaire, RCQ (Readiness to Change Questionnaire), NEO-FFI (Five Factor Inventory), SELFCS (Self-Compassion Scale), FSCRS (Self-Criticism Functions Scale), EVEI (Internal and External Shame Scale) e BSI (Brief Symptom Inventory), 100 people, aged between 20 and 69 years, with the most prevalent age range of 40 to 69 years (86.0%), mostly male (81%), admitted to the Unit of Alcohology of Coimbra (UAC: n = 55) and in Therapeutic Community (TC: n = 45). Results: Most of the subjects were male, aged 40-69, single, with basic education, started heavy drinking between the ages of 20-39, for social reasons, took the initiative in treat ment, had 1 to 2 previous hospitalisations, had family members with alcohol problems, had no other psychiatric disorders and had psychological and psychiatric follow-up. Statistically significant associations were identified between gender, age group, marital status, psychiatric and psychological follow-up and type of hospitalisation (UAC and TC), with the majority being at the reflection and action stage. When comparing the stages of change reflection and action, these were not statistically significantly related to the sociodemographic and clinical variables. When correlating the readiness for change and the remaining constructs, only a statistically significant correlation was identified between the action stage and friendliness (personality), that is, the greater the friendliness, the greater the action for change. Conclusion: As patients are not yet fully predisposed to change, it is important to promote interventions such as relapse prevention, the motivational approach, skills training, relaxation techniques, group meetings, psychoeducational sessions, self-acceptance, working on the affective level, stress, anxiety, depressive symptoms, shame, self-criticism, promoting self-tranquilization and compassion for the self.
