Contrariamente a estudos existentes sobre o tema que utilizam métodos econométricos de elevada complexidade onde consideram comportamentos idênticos entre toda a amostra, este estudo procurou usar métodos estatísticos simples e intuitivos para determinar os fatores influentes na evolução dos NPL, através da criação de grupos de países com características homogéneas, compreendendo as diferenças comportamentais entre si.Financial Institutions are an important pillar of the global economy and society, presenting a highrisk component for carrying out activities with an aspect associated with the unpredictability and fluctuation of results that directly impact the financial return. To estimate expected losses, it is necessary to have an in-depth knowledge of what are its influencing factors. From studies already carried out, it was found that one of the biggest losses of institutions results from high rates of Non-Performing Loans. Considering the negative effects of NPL on banking and the economy, this dissertation aims to analyze and deepen the influence of macro and microeconomic variables in the variation of these rates, assessing which factors lead to their increase and identifying the main differences between groups of countries above and below the average. For the analysis, 20 European Union countries were chosen, in the period between 2005 and 2017. The dissertation is divided into two chapters: the presentation of the methodologies used and the results obtained. The first is structured in two sub-chapters: theoretical concepts of mathematical models and procedures for the treatment of information and construction of statistical models. The second presents the results obtained and the estimates made until obtaining the final model, using multiple linear regression models. The results show that the “Unemployment Rate” is the variable with the greatest explanatory power for the variation of NPL in most countries and also the existence of differences between the significant variables of each group. In countries with high levels of NPL, it was found that in addition to this variable, also the level of RWA, “Judicial Efficiency” and “Real Estate Price” are important to explain their behavior. In the countries with low levels of NPL, the variables considered explanatory were “Available Income”, ROE and NIM. This macroeconomic information resulting from the study can be useful in decision making by Central Banks since it identifies the factors that most influence NPL. The sample period is influenced by a financial crisis and by measures taken by Central Banks in its follow-up, influencing the relationship between variables and NPL. A longer period would increase the statistical robustness of the identified variables. Contrary to existing studies on the subject that use econometric methods of high complexity where they considered identical behaviors across the entire sample, this study sought to use simple and intuitive statistical methods to determine the influential factors in the evolution of NPL, through the creation of groups of countries with homogeneous characteristics, including behavioral differences between them.Bravo, Jorge Miguel VenturaRUNSerra, Ana Rita Guerreiro2020-09-10T17:38:02Z2020-07-272020-07-27T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10362/103846TID:202516512porinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2024-03-11T04:49:29Zoai:run.unl.pt:10362/103846Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-20T03:40:05.026498Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse |
