Non-Suicidal Self-Injury in Adolescence and Perspective of Cognitive- -Behavioral Therapies

Resumo: Self-harm, whether suicidal or non-suicidal, is currently an unavoidable public health problem, due to their high incidence and impact. Non-suicidal self-injury is more common in adolescence, including in young people with a normative development. Prevalence rates of non-suicidal self-injury are considerably higher in the clinical population, with 50% to 60% of adolescents with psychopathology reporting one or more episodes of non-suicidal self-injury. These behaviours may be associated with more than one cause and function, as a result of the interaction between multiple risk and maintenance factors, such as genetic, biological, psychiatric, psychological, social and cultural. The high prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury in the clinical population and the challenges associated with approaching these young people, whether in assessment or intervention, contribute to the relevance of this narrative review. Our aims are the characterization of non-suicidal self-injury and the summarization of the evidence about the assessment and intervention from the perspective of cognitive-behavioral therapies.

Os comportamentos autolesivos não suicidáriossão mais comuns na fase da adolescência, mesmo em jovens com um desenvolvimento normativo. A sua prevalênciaé, contudo, consideravelmente superior na população clínica, com 50% a 60% dos adolescentes com psicopatologiaa apresentar episódios únicos ou repetidos de comportamentos autolesivos não suicidários. Estes comportamentos podem associar-se a mais do que uma causa e função, em resultado da interação entre múltiplos fatores de risco e de manutenção, como por exemplo, genéticos, biológicos, psiquiátricos, psicológicos, sociais e culturais.
