Resumo: The influence that industry and its outputs had in the formation of modern times is undeniable. Therefore, it is worrying that we are now being witnesses to the abandonment of buildings that constitute living documents of an era of constant transformation. This document aims at alerting to the consequences of deindustrialization, as well as to the existing tools to solve this problem. For this, we consider the existing hypotheses based on rehabilitation, with special focus on the conversion, in order to explore its specific features. For a better understanding of the motivations behind this practice we have chosen six case studies in different geographical locations. Such a diverse set of example is intended to enable a more representative analysis of the genesis of this interventional action and its potential. In order to better understand the importance of the Industrial Patrimony, it was necessary not only to study the evolution of the concept 'patrimony' and 'monument', till they covered industrial buildings, but as well the history of its development, as an important element and contributor to architecture. The abandonment of industrial buildings has strong consequences in the community. The reuse by conversion is an economic and ecological response with the goal of trying to reverse this decline. It is not our intention to present the conversion as the only solution able to solve this problem. Nevertheless, this approach incites special attention to its adjacent assumptions. Adaptations and transformations might compromise the integrity and the values of the building. Thus, it is necessary to understand the consequences of the changes. It is clear that it is possible to make non-intrusive conversions respecting the pre-existent elements. Possible changes should not prevent the original reading, spatially, in form or materially. For this, it is equally relevant the suitability of the new program, since the more inappropriate ones result in more prominent changes.
