Resumo: | Pollination by bees is a vital service for the maintenance of many ecosystems around the world. However, the lack of available information on the diversity and habits of wild bees, coupled with the pressure of human activity on their natural habitats, puts the survival of these pollinators at risk. In Portugal, there are few studies related to wild bees, and currently there is only a provisional list of all species identified so far, which has already registered about 700 species. As a strategy to raise the awareness of the general population on the subject, the development of an illustrated guide on bee diversity in Portugal was proposed. The present work is part of this future guide and is focussed to develop a series of illustrations of native plants in the Portuguese territory that have a direct relationship with the bee species presented in the publication. In order to promote a detailed documentation from the visual representation of each species and as a way to combine scientific knowledge with the field of arts, scientific illustration methodologies were used. For this purpose, information was gathered, in the theoretical scope, regarding Botanical Art - the field of scientific illustration dedicated to the vegetable kingdom - and the basic morphology of plants, in search of contributions that would help conduct the project in a more consistent way in its practical component. It is hoped that the illustrations resulting from this research may help to spread the knowledge and preserve the memory of the plants discussed here and their relationship with the bee species native to Portugal. |
