This dissertation arose from the possibility of carrying out an intervention project in a house from the first half of the twentieth century, located in Douro. An object that represents a way of life and a building system different from what is the current norm. Its study is necessary, not only for the intervention in this architecture, but also as one of the elements to be integrated in the consideration of sustainability as one of various important issues that a project should respond to. The way and system of construction revealed itself as a source of knowledge, full of architectural potentialities and principles, explored and transformed during the design process. Casa do Fontão is the study object and the coordinating element of this dissertation, simultaneously a source of learning and inspiration. The project aspires to enhance its qualities and respect its character, adapting to new demands.
