The present dissertation intends to inventory, contextualize and study the photographic collection of the Creative Office of the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, and the author who initiated it – Jorge Afonso Garizo do Carmo –, characterizing the institution to which his production belongs. It was in this place, between 1978 and 1996, that this artist worked as a graphic designer and director of the respective office for ten years, in addition to having revealed to be a great figure in the field of Graphic Design and several arts, both nationally and internationally. After briefly presenting the history of the TNDM II and the institution characterization, an approach is made to its functioning, in particular to the Library | Archive and its collections. Then, the biographical career of Garizo do Carmo and his relationship with the TNDM II are deepened. In order to characterize the author's photographic profusion, an inventory of the collection was carried out that allowed the analysis and determination of its state of conservation. A total of 24 779 photographic species were identified, containing 23 806 species on photographic film, and 973 contact proofs, that are related to the time in which he photographed the rehearsals and shows performed in this theatre, which reveal the resident and guest cast that participated in these plays. These photographic records were intended to serve as a basis for the creation of posters and other promotional graphic materials of the TNMD II. It is also important to mention the unique character of this collection which, in addition of containing records of theatrical productions, moments and characters of Portuguese theatre, treasures part of the history of TNDM II, which is a legacy with artistic and documentary value. Finally, a risk analysis was carried out, which makes it possible to understand the characteristics and issues related to the preservation of this collection and to highlight the conservation conditions of the place where the TNDM II collections are stored
