Compreender e intervir sobre os "espaços vazios" em contexto (sub) urbano: uma análise sobre Fiães, Santa Maria da Feira

This dissertation presents a study on contemporary urbanization processes, propounding the understanding of empty spaces as a possible method of study for the territories that result from those processes, and it seeks to question the intervention and construction methodes in these places. The structure is divided into three parts. In the first one, we present a reflection on the current (sub)urban context, resorting to the understanding of the concepts of city, field, center, periphery, space, place and emptiness, based on the interpretation of its iconographic representation and the symbols associated with them, trying to perceive the way of interaction between this representation with the geometry and with the geography of these territories. In the second part, through the choice of a specific case study, the parish of Fiães, in Santa Maria da Feira's municipality, we confront the study presented in the first part with the characteristics recognized in this particular place. First, we pointed out the historical-cultural context and the socio-spatial profile of this place, based on the selected bibliography, on the analisys of statistical data and also on the information that we collected through the site survey. Using the sociospatial profile and looking at the routes, the limits and the existing spaces management, we try to recognize the organization and the administration of these places, pointing the need to (re)think the current public space. Seeking to reflect about the (sub)urban territory, recognizing emptiness as an expectant place and accepting the ambiguity and the unfinished condition of the territory as a stimulus for this reflection, we try to perceive how the socio-spatial dynamics of the territory can be related with the idealization of a project adequate to it. We conclude the study by presenting a collective space's proposal, designed in a set of abandoned empty spaces, in Fiães's central zone.
