Configuration and urbanity in settlements in the Amazon: the lessons from Afuá (Pará State, Brazil)

Resumo: Urbanity is the quality that an urban space can display in order to welcome and promote copresence. The city, in its configuration, can "send" invitations for people to use urban space in a socially dynamic way. The research is based on this premise and investigates the configurational attributes in Afuá (PA State/ Brazil) seeking to understand to what extent its configuration affects levels of urbanity. Located in the Marajó archipelago, Afuá is a city surrounded by water and forest. Built on stilts, it has no motor vehicle traffic. The architecture aligned with the Amazon way of construction and its urban form and mobility seem to enhance the quality of life. Based on the Theory of Social Logic of Space, the research is developed in three stages: the first is focused on accessibility; the second, on permanence in public space; and the third, on meetings. The study intends to answer the following research question: "how does the urban space configuration in Afuá issues invitations that affect urbanity levels?"

A cidade, em sua configuração, pode “enviar” convites para que as pessoas utilizem o espaço urbano de maneira socialmente dinâmica. A pesquisa fundeia-se nesta premissa e investiga aspectos configuracionais em Afuá (PA/Brasil), por meio da Teoria da Lógica Social do Espaço (Sintaxe do Espaço) a partir da investigação de atributos de acessibilidade, permanência no espaço público e encontros. Busca-se responder à seguinte questão de pesquisa: de que forma a configuração do espaço urbano de Afuá emite convites que afetam níveis de urbanidade? Localizada no Arquipélago do Marajó, Afuá é uma cidade contida por água e floresta. Construída sobre palafitas, não possui tráfego de veículos motores.
