Como passam os adolescentes que vivem com doença crónica na escola, na família e com os amigos?

The objective of this study was to analyze the quality of life of Portuguese adolescents and to verity the impact of having a chronic health condition, namely with impact on the participation on school, family and social life (peers and leisure). A total of 8215 Portuguese adolescents (53.9% girls) attending the 8th, 10th and 12th grades in Portugal were included in the Health Behavior in School aged Children (HBSC) study. Adolescents were asked about their quality of life and aspects related to the existence of physical and psychological symptoms, as well as if the chronic health condition has impact on the participation on school, family and social life (peers and leisure). Adolescents with chronic health conditions present significantly more physical and psychological symptoms and less perceived quality of life. Controlling gender and age, the existence of physical or psychological symptoms has a negative impact on the perception of quality of life. This relationship is stronger when adolescents report having a chronic health condition with an impact on participation and attendance at school, in the family or at leisure. The difficulty of participation in the family is the one that adds more explanatory value. These results suggest that, in relation to adolescents with chronic health conditions, intervention efforts should focus on ensuring their social and affective participation in the family, school and at leisure with the peer group.
