Resumo: The holiday home "Alves Costa" (1964 - 1968), in Moledo do Minho, is the focus of this study: the understanding of architecture performed by Alvaro Siza in his early years of practice. Starting with the principles taken by the architect - Álvaro Siza − his references and the design way of those times; Siza, Távora, Aalto are analysed with the purpose to better understand his architecture; the moment when the house was designed and built, is seen as a constraint and also as a guide of His production. For him, the modern ideals along with the recognition of portuguese architecture work together in same discussion by searching to an architecture that best suited Portugal. Not only the house Alves Costa, but other projects of this period, are characterized by signs and intentions taken by Siza. Thus, the work is studied as a whole, investigating his architecture and his searches. After a brief background, the focus will be only directed to the house. We begin, therefore, by the remoteness of the location until its implantation. Here, the place will be studied as material of designing process, making part of the choices taken by Siza. The study begins in the plant, as it contains the geometry and ambient wanted solid and clear, and at the same time, targeted and labyrinthine. The plan clarifies the difficult perception of the proposed volumes, also is the construction that marks the culmination of the work, like a confirmation of all principles and measures taken. The materials along with building techniques are part of a trial in his architecture. The analysis will end on the human aspects of the house. How the space awakens feeling in the inhabitants. Convenience factors such as light, textures, and the temperature of the material and size of the environments are applied to create atmospheres and living spaces. In same extent, the human body will be discussed on his moves trough this space and how he creates relations with it. Finally, it would be impossible to finish without understanding the dwelling it contains. The informality of this way of living, come from the experiences of another one - the holiday house.
