Encaminhamento em redes heterogéneas: um estudo de caso baseado na rede da Universidade de Aveiro

This article addresses the routing problem in heterogeneous local area networks. In particular, the routing requirements derived from the integration of an ATM network in the University of Aveiro (UA) data network are addressed. ATM technology enables a more flexible network management at cost of an extended complexity in the required routing solutions. ATM technology enables the implementation of (1) different logical networks for working groups without restrictions on their number of members or location in the network and (2) different services with different Quality of Service requirements. In the UA case, these two ATM facilities were required to be used to cope with its operational requirements. This article shows how the routing protocols available in existent routers do not enable to take full advantage of all described ATM functionalities. The solution implemented in the UA network, and describedin this article, includes the use of a special feature of CISCOrouters called policy routing.
