Esas definiciones de Calatrava se publicaron en 2015, pero a partir de una versión incompleta y con lagunas, transmitida en portugués por un códice del convento de Avis, compilado en la segunda mitad del siglo XV. El nuevo testimonio de estas definiciones descubierto en Alcobaça, también en una traducción al portugués de 1439-1440, no solo es más completo, sino que ofrece muchas variantes preferibles. Publicado en el anexo, trae noticias importantes sobre las definiciones de Calatrava de finales del siglo XIII, promulgadas por el capítulo general de Císter para regular aspectos decisivos de la vida interna de la orden, que eran entonces causa de tensión y de discordia entre los freiles. Entre ellos, estaba la recepción de novicios y el ritual de la profesión, la elección de los maestres y la división de los bienes de la orden, o la duración y el ritmo de las visitas del abad de Morimond. Si las definiciones nos ayudan a conocer el ambiente que caracterizó la vida de la orden a finales del siglo XIII, su traducción al portugués permite detectar, por otro lado, las razones dictadas por el interés del monasterio de Alcobaça que hallamos detrás de la normativa de Calatrava. The discovery of another testimony of the “Definições” of the Order of Calatrava of the late thirteenth century among the codices of the Alcobaça monastery, now preserved in the National Library of Portugal, in Lisbon, was the starting point of this work. Those “definições” of Calatrava were published in 2015, but from an incomplete and gaping version, transmitted in Portuguese by a codex of the convent of Avis, compiled in the second half of the fifteenth century. The new testimony of these “definições” discovered in Alcobaça, also in a Portuguese translation of 1439-1440, is not only more complete, but offers many preferable variants. Published as an appendix, the “definições” of Calatrava from the end of the 13th century, promulgated by the general chapter of Cister, bring important data on decisive aspects of the internal life of the order, which were then a cause of tension and discord. Among them, there was the reception of novices and the ritual of the profession, the election of the masters and the division of the assets of the order, or the duration and rhythm of the visits of the abbot of Morimond.
