The use of cork in construction: innovation, institutions and application in Lisbon during the 1940s

Resumo: Cork has been present in everyday life, established as a building material, since the beginning of the 20th century. Since the end of the 19th century, with the arrival of new patents, the material has been valued by the United States industry. In this article, we will address the affirmation of cork as a construction material based on the analysis of a laboratory in Lisbon and of two works in the city, where it is noted that the new uses derive from the technical performance (acoustic and thermal) of the material but also of an association with an image of modernity. The intersection between the institutional and business variable makes it possible, in synthesis, to understand the architectural work in a broader context, beyond the pure architectural object, as part of a production and innovation process.

Desde finales del siglo XIX, con la llegada de nuevas patentes, el material es valorado por la industria de Estados Unidos. En este artículo abordaremos la afirmación del corcho como material de construcción a partir del análisis de un laboratorio en Lisboa y de dos obras en la ciudad, donde se advierte que los nuevos usos derivan de las prestaciones técnicas (acústicas y térmicas) del material, pero también de una asociación con una imagen de modernidad. En síntesis, el cruce entre las variables institucional, empresarial y arquitectónica, nos permite entender la complejidad del proceso que permite al corcho posicionarse en el ámbito de la  construcción.A cortiça esteve presente na vida quotidiana, estabilizada como um material de construção, desde princípios do século XX. A partir de finais do século XIX, com o advento de novas patentes, o material é valorizado pela indústria dos Estados Unidos. Neste artigo, abordaremos a afirmação da cortiça como material de construção, a partir da análise de um laboratório de Lisboa e de duas obras na mesma cidade, onde se percebe que as novas utilizações decorrem não só do desempenho técnico (acústico e térmico) do material, mas também de uma associação a uma imagem de modernidade.
