Resumo: By providing an overview of Abel Botelho’s work, considered to be emblematic of the Portuguese Naturalism, and, more particularly, by analysing the novel entitled Fatal Dilema, we seek to demonstrate that, in spite of the naturalistic intention of representing the absolute truth, that doesn’t occur in his fiction in which an extensive use of grotesque elements prevails, thus distorting the objective reality that both realists and naturalists attempted to capture.
