Os processos de encontro com o diferente nem sempre foram acontecimentos para o conhecimento desse «outro» enquanto «descoberta » dele mesmo, mas servem, na maior parte das vezes para comunicarmos o que somos, manipulado a ordem da comunicação pelo domínio dos instrumentos que a permitem, neste caso a escrita. Partindo do exemplo da escrita conquistadora que definiu quem era o americano, passaremos para o papel da antropologia, enquanto ciência interpretativa do outro.
