Resumo: Saramago's novels always play with the problems of identity, even when, apparently, they seem to hide this undeniable reality. Sentences are frequently ironic, if not sarcastic, and the discourse is full of hyper-detailed analysis of grotesque and insignificant details. However, these details, as I have already demonstrated (MARINHO, 2009), will play a fundamental role in the identity maze that is indirectly and covertly woven. Our study will focus on two types of identity: the individual and the collective. In the first topic, we study the novels that lift the identity instability's veil; in the second topic, we will pay attention to national identity and all its avatars.
