Resumo: The text presents a discussion on the representation of violence in contemporary Brazilian cinema. Focusing specially the films Carandiru, directed by Hector Babenco (2003), and Tropa de Elite (The Elite Squad), directed by José Padilha (2007), the essay evaluates in those works the utilization of the tragic device (with emphasis in the concepts of fear, pity and catharsis). It also analyzes the meaning of works based on a politically correct discourse (like Carandiru) and compares it with Padilha’s proposal to construct a film guided by a protagonist who is member of a elit police troop. Recalling narrative models of the western, the article reflects other genres that deals in the cinema with anomie in the society.

Enfocando sobretudo Carandiru, de Hector Babenco (2003), e Tropa de Elite, de José Padilha (2007), o ensaio desenvolve uma discussão sobre a utilização do dispositivo trágico (sobretudo dos conceitos de medo, piedade e catarse) nestas obras. Ele discute também o significado de obras calcadas em um discurso politicamente correto (o caso do Carandiru) e as confronta com a proposta de Padilha de narrar seu filme a partir do capitão Nascimento, um membro de um batalhão das forças de elite da polícia.
