Resumo: This investigation has the aim to understand "how to build in already existing architecture" inpatrimonial context. To achieve this aim we used the old Madre de Deus de Monchique Convent in Oporto historiccentre as a hypothetical project to understand the meaning and size of the architecture interventionin patrimonial context. Given its oldness and abandonment state, the XV century building iscollapsing and in ruins. The confrontation with a physical real context gave us ways to tackle this question forming ourinvestigation field. Perceiving the old convent functions and spaces, we tried to imagine a newuse to the convent that could rise both its memory and contemporary value to the city of Oporto. For this, we decide to direct this investigation towards two complementary directions. The firstone is to understand the restoration and conservation question in a theoretical plane, were weexpose and relate different ideas and attitudes dealing with historic buildings. The other way isabout noticing the restoration of historic buildings in Portugal, specifying three projects in oldmonasteries used as case studies, endeavouring the proximity to our hypothetical project. In Architecture, projects are actual investigations about all kind of concerns to solve the existingwith new forms and values. This investigation and project is about how memory and transformationcan meet in historic buildings.
