Economic deprivation and crime: the case of Portugal (1993-2009)

Resumo: | Taking Portugal and the period from 1993 to 2009 as its points of reference, this article analyses the relationship between economic deprivation and crimes against people and property that were recorded by the police authorities. The statistical regression analyses carried out included economic, demographic and social variables and the results obtained show that situations reflecting the economic juncture and greater deprivation are associated with a higher incidence of crime against people, though, on the other hand, a lower incidence of crime against property. The results obtained are discussed against the background of the theoretical corpus available and the methodological options adopted. |

Los análisis de regresión estadística efectuados incluyeron variables de naturaleza económica, demográfica y social y los resultados obtenidos muestran queescenarios de mayor privación económica están asociados a volúmenes más elevados de crímenes contra las personas, pero también a volúmenes menos elevados de crímenes contra el patrimonio. Los resultadosobtenidos son discutidos teniendo como referencia el cuerpo teórico disponible y las opciones metodológicas tomadas.Cet article prend pour référence le Portugal et la période comprise entre 1993 et 2009, afin d’analyser le lien entre le dénuement économique et les atteintes à l’intégrité physique et aux biens enregistrées par lesautorités policières. Les analyses de régression statistique effectuées ont inclus des variables de nature économique, démographique et sociale et les résultats obtenus montrent que les situations conjoncturelles deplus grand dénuement économique sont associées à un plus grand nombre d’atteintes à l’intégrité physique, mais aussi à un nombre moins élevé d’atteintes aux biens. Les résultats obtenus sont discutés enprenant comme référence le corpus théorique disponible et les options méthodologiques suivies.Tendo como referência Portugal e o período compreendido entre 1993 e 2009, neste artigo são analisadas as relações existentes entre privação económica e crimes contra as pessoas e contra o património registados pelas autoridades policiais. As análises de regressão estatística efectuadas incluíram variáveis de natureza económica, demográfica e social e os resultados obtidos mostram que situações conjunturais de maior privação económica estão associadas a volumes mais elevados de crimes contra as pessoas, mas também a volumes menos elevados de crimes contra o património.
