Many cancer patients, especially those with diagnoses of lung and breast cancer have Malignant Pleural Effusion. There are several treatments options most of which require hospitalization. The Indwelling Pleural Catheter (IPC) PleurX™ (from BD, USA) is a relatively new treatment and that can be conducted as an outpatient. With the IPC the pleural effusion can be drained at home by the patient himself or caregivers. The nurses have a crucial role in the education educating patient/carer and other health professionals on how to perform the drainage and care for the. The purpose of this article is to characterize patients with IPC in order to identify appropriate nursing care and to disseminate among other healthcare professionals the standard care for this patients.
