Resumo: The following study is devoted to the vernacular architecture of the Avieira culture. The analysis and interpretation of the characteristics, circumstances and surroundings in which the study-object is placed are the main focus of this investigation. The principle focus of this case study is the palafitic Avieiro settlement, whose construction began in the early twentieth century.Looking for better living conditions, the Avieiros, coming from Praia da Vieira, migrated to the banks of the Tagus river. Influenced by other palafitic constructions, they adapted to the conditions and built with the available resources. The subject's choice is due to the intention of recording and preserving a culture that is disappearing. It's a type of architecture with regional characteristics, marked by the time and socio-economic characteristics of a country that used to be mostly rural but today is part of a global world. This country must preserve its cultural heritage. The lack of survivable conditions and a lack of sensitivity in the design of the territory by the competent authorities led to the depopulation of many Avieiro settlements, including the one studied. This work consists of the registration and characterization of twenty-four buildings that still exist in Palhota. These are composed of various and different construction elements that define the overall image of the settlement. Diversity is a key characteristic of this place. This culture is known for its knowledge of the natural environment and its memory has marked this territory. In order to protect it, it is essential to create and add new contemporary adjusted uses to the settlements.
