Morte, memória e esquecimento : projeto expositivo a partir de fotografias post-mortem

This work emerged from an internship carried out at the Museological Center of the Centro de Interpretação dos Cemitérios Municipais de Lisboa (CICML), carrying out an inventory and cataloging of the Photographic Collection and, based on its knowledge, the object of study was chosen: the photographs post-mortem, located in the aforementioned collection. From this, the central objective of the research was the elaboration of an exhibition project called “Death, Memory and Forgetfulness: Exhibition Project from post-mortem photographs”, as specific objectives the aforementioned internship, for the inventory and cataloging of the Photographic Collection; research on post-mortem photographs to better understand the chosen object of study, its practices; and finally, analysis and understanding of elements and concepts necessary for the preparation of the exhibition project. For the development of the research, documental analysis was used as a methodology, based on academic publications, institutional documents of the CICML and the Divisão de Gestão Cemiterial (DGC), newspapers and periodicals of the time, analysis of the research object, post-mortem photographs, as well as other photographs from the collection that could assist in the research; observations and on-site visits to the Prazeres and Carnide Cemeteries; in addition to interviews with professionals from the aforementioned Cemeteries, whose studies and knowledge focus on the theme developed. The main concepts underlying this investigation were the presentification of Louis-Vincent Thomas (1985); mourning by Christiane Pantoja de Souza and Airle Miranda de Souza (2019); Walter Benjamin's Trace and Aura (2007); and exhibition as a means of communication by Marília Xavier Cury (2005a) and Angela Blanco (2009), who contributed to the theoretical basis, along with other references presente throughout the work that add to the theme. The work sought to answer the question of the lack of studies on post-mortem photographs in Portugal, so that the importance and need for studies on this topic was understood, considering that it was a common practice in the 19th century and also carried out here by the photographic studios of the time, besides having an entire industry and market around death, but we can observe that the post-mortem photographs themselves did not reverberate to the graves, but rather, they remained in the most intimate familiar.
