Estratégias de Intervenção e de Apropriação em habitação de promoção pública: o caso do Bairro São João de Deus

In the scope of the public promotion of housing, the purpose of this work is to analyze the transformation processes of the São João de Deus. The theme of housing for the poorer classes is recognized as a matter of relevance today, since there is still a population that lacks housing with the minimum conditions of health. Using São João de Deus as a study case, this will serve as a motto for the exploration and analysis of some of the public housing promotion policies in the 20th century, in the city of Oporto. Topics such as "Ilhas", working colonies, the Affordable Houses Programme. (1933) and the Houses built under the Improvement Plan for the City of Oporto (1956-66) will be summarily addressed, as initiatives and policies implemented by the State in an attempt to combat housing problem for a specific social class. Analyzing the urban and social transformations of São João de Deus, firstly will be approached the recent rehabilitation process and, then, the strategies related to the alteration of the existing typologies. This analysis will be important for the confrontation of the different forms of use, appropriation and experience of the spaces by its occupants. It also refers to the need to integrate residents of neighborhoods such as São João de Deus in the requalification processes or in the actions to be carried out, in order to promote collaboration with the competent entities, promoting the feeling of belonging or accountability to these places.
